To Complete a Smog Check in California:
- Locate a DMV-approved smog check station
- Complete the smog inspection
- Submit the smog certification to the DMV
Eligibility
- Vehicles 8 years old or less are exempt from biennial smog checks but must pay the $20 smog abatement fee annually.
- Vehicles powered by natural gas weighing over 14,000 lbs. are exempt.
- Diesel-powered vehicles that are model year 1997 or older OR have a gross weight rating over 14,000 lbs. are exempt.
- Electric vehicles and motorcycles are exempt.
- Specially constructed vehicles model year 1976 and newer require smog checks.
